Out and About

Foodie Travels: New York City

One of my goals for 2017 is to get out & travel more! There’s so much to see and only so much time to see it – plus escaping Chicago during the winter isn’t the worst idea. A weekend trip to the Big Apple this past Fall with Leah of The Suburbanista really left me bitten by the travel bug and fueled my vacation passion!

I hadn’t been back to New York City since spending a semester there during college and I was more than ready to dive into the foodie scene head first! Here are a few of my favorite eateries on my journey through NYC…

THE ALCOVE RESTAURANT
Neighborhood: Sunnyside, Queens

During my trip, I stayed with an old friend in the Sunnyside neighborhood in Queens. This was my first time really experiencing Queens and it’s a great place to unwind from the hustle & bustle of Manhattan. On the first night of our stay, we grabbed dinner and drinks at The Alcove & it quickly became one of my favorite spots. For my meal I decided on the Grilled Cheese on Challah Bread with a side of Truffle Fries that were DELISH! Honestly, I would go back to New York, JUST to get these fries. The ambience of the restaurant became pretty pub-like after about 11 PM, which was ideal for catching up over a few drinks.

BEC
Neighborhood: Chelsea, Manhattan

As if this is breaking new to anyone anymore…Spoiler alert: I love brunch! BEC in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan is a quick-service  spot that still feels like a restaurant that you could casually spend a 3 hour brunch in. Although it was pretty crowded when we got there, we were able to find seating to enjoy our Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Sandwiches – get it??…BEC… I kept it classy and went with the BEC Classic along with an O.J. and banana nut muffin. The best thing about BEC is that all of the ingredients are locally sourced, so you’ll feel like you’re doing a good thing while stuffing your face.

Billy’s Bakery
Neighborhood: Chelsea, Manhattan

Billy's Bakery Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

As if any trip anywhere with me could be complete with a stop by a bakery…enter Billy’s Bakery! When I lived a mere 8 blocks from Billy’s in college, I was a regular – 8 years later & nothing has changed. Billy’s is a classic bakery that feels very nostalgic and offers AMAZING sweets & treats! Although it was hard to make a decision, I landed on the Banana Nutella Cupcake and I did not regret it. The cupcake, made from fresh bananas, was perfectly moist & the Nutella cream cheese frosting really put the icing on the cake. It was hard not to buy a whole dozen!

I’m already planning my next trip to New York & it isn’t soon enough!
